Academics at BOS

SEN

At the British Overseas School, we believe that every child is unique and capable of achieving success when given the right support. Our Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision is built on the belief that learning should be inclusive, compassionate, and empowering for all.

SEN at BOS recognises that some students may need additional help to access the curriculum or reach their full potential. Our philosophy centres around understanding each child as an individual, celebrating their strengths, and providing the guidance and tools they need to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.

Our Approach

At BOS, we take a proactive approach to identifying and supporting students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). By spotting learning differences early and responding with targeted strategies, we help every child grow in confidence and capability.

Our approach includes:

  • Early identification and intervention to address learning needs as soon as possible.
  • Individualised Learning Plans (ILPs) that set personalised goals and track progress.
  • Collaboration between teachers, parents, and specialists to ensure consistent support at home and school.
  • Pull-out 1:1 and small group sessions providing focused attention in key areas of need.

We work closely with families to ensure that every student receives the support, encouragement, and care they deserve.

Areas of Support

Our SEN Department provides assistance across a wide range of needs, including:

  • Learning Difficulties: Such as dyslexia and dyscalculia.
  • Speech and Language Needs: Supporting communication, understanding, and expression.
  • Social, Emotional, Behavioural, and Mental Health: Helping students manage emotions and build positive relationships.
  • Sensory and Physical Needs: Offering assistance for fine or gross motor challenges.
  • Autism Spectrum Conditions: Providing structured support to enhance communication, social interaction, and flexibility.

Every child’s needs are unique, and we tailor our support to ensure meaningful progress in all areas of development.

Support in Action

Support at BOS happens every day in classrooms, in small groups, and in one-to-one settings. We aim to make every child feel confident, capable, and included.

This comprises:

  • In-class support from Learning Assistants to help students stay engaged and on track.
  • Small-group and one-to-one sessions to target specific learning or social skills.
  • Differentiated teaching strategies within lessons to match different learning styles and abilities.
  • Regular progress reviews and parent meetings to celebrate achievements and adjust support as needed.

At BOS, we believe that with the right guidance and care, every child can discover their strengths and reach their full potential.

The Team

Our SEN provision is led by Ms. Malaika Malik, the school’s SEN Coordinator (SENCo), supported by our principal, Head of Primary, specialist teachers and learning assistants.
